We are in the process of building out our expedition rig, think faux Sportsmobile, and are trying to decide on blackwater capacity. Do you guys carry an extra cassette for your toilet or is one enough?

One cassette is plenty for us. And believe me, you don’t want to be carrying more black waste than necessary! It will usually last us up to 5 days before the cassette is full but emptying it has never been difficult. I suppose you could even bring a shovel and bury it if necessary?

Got pics of your rig yet? Would love to see it!

Thanks Sam! We currently have our spare on the back but we are thinking about moving it to under the van to add a storage box in it’s place, or add one to the other side. Right now we can open the passenger rear door from the inside but if we add another swing out that ability would be lost. The box could hold a spare cassette outside the van if we decide to bring one. Hearing you can get 5 days makes us rethink that idea and re-appropriate that space for other gear. We will have a shovel, I know we’ll get stuck at some point, so I figured why not dig the van in even more ; ) Really, I like to have a shovel for digging out fire pits and such so that may be one of its uses if the need arises. Our website is in much need of a redesign but I’ll add some photos to the recent entry about getting the van and we will be documenting our entire build.

Hi Sam and Erica: Have you had any problems with the diesel fuel along the way?

The current prices for gas is $2.50 +- in California debit or cash, what are the prices on your travels now do you see any major fluctuations? I know that earlier in your trip you stated that one country fuel was really expensive.

I noticed that not all the people were wearing “THE TEN GALLON HATS”, is this an age or status in the community symbol if you are aware?

The price of gas varies dramatically in each country depending on if the government subsides the gas or not and if they are an oil producing country. In Ecuador diesel is fixed at $1.03 a gallon! But in Peru deisel was about $5.30 a gallon. The average price is over $4.00 for our trip per gallon.

And mostly the older people wore the hats from the traditional villages around the city. There were also many people in modern jeans and baseball hats.
