Oaxaca city with Mom

My parents had both be planning on visiting us in Oaxaca for nine days, but unfortunately my Dad had to cancel because of the death of his Mom, so it was us solo with my Mom. For the last few months we have been sending things to my parents house we need for the XP and our trip. My poor Mom arrived at the airport after a brutal red eye with layovers with huge boxes (our new Fantastic Fans) and massive amounts of luggage with other goodies, she was our mule. Since we don’t have a back seat, we shoved her in the front with all six feet of me on her lap in the cab and drove the crazy streets of Oaxaca to our hotel. Welcome to Mexico Mom =).

So far on this trip we had only spent three nights in a hotel in Mexico City. For the last seven months we have been happy to sleep in the comfy bed of our XP. We now had eight nights in a hotel in Oaxaca, it was strange to be out of the camper for so long, but a fun change of pace. Oaxaca is a great walking city and we got into daily routines very fast: get delicious local coffee at coffee shop, buy fresh squeezed OJ from the juice guy, find breakfast, explore, get tasty lunch at market, talk about where we were going to have dinner, happy hour on rooftop bar……

Basically we ate and drank all week in this city famous for its great food (I am working on a separate food post). We also explored the local villages, took cooking classes and climbed pyramids. We loved slowing down and getting to know this lovely city. It was really easy traveling with my Mom and hope my parents join us in other areas of the Americas.

Here is our week in the city in pictures:

We have a lot of pictures in front of churches.....I thought this one was cute of us.

The beautiful Zocalo. Great place to hang out. Only complaint was all the vendors trying to sell you things.

We were here during Valentines week and there was music and dancing every night in the Zocalo. This was a police band, it was really fun.

My friends tease me that Sam is not is any pictures. It is because he is a way better photographer than me. He is an out of focus example at a rooftop bar. Lots of margaritas....

Museo de las Culturas de Oaxaca was one of the highlights of the city. The museum is in an old convent and is one of the prettiest buildings I have been in n Mexico.
