Bahía de los Ángeles- Clam hunting at Playa Gringa

We have now been in Baja for 25 days, almost all of them camping on the beach. The beach camping here has exceeded all my expectations. I never imagined you could drive up a few feet from the high tide line next to a palapa and park your car for less than $5.00 a day. And the crazy thing is the beaches are almost empty! It feels so remote, yet so safe and welcoming. I just don’t understand how more people are not flocking to these beaches and doing this.

The toilets were far from glamorous, but you have to love the view around them.

At nights we have camp fires on the beach and watch the stars. During the day we forage for clams, swim, read books, spend hours cooking complex meals, talk……We are still traveling with Richard and Ashley, the couple we met in Vancouver back in September. We never planned to be traveling with another couple, but we have found that we travel really well together. Also, we have been able to almost always negotiate better prices for camping with two vehicles (basically two for one everywhere). We all give each other space, have similar traveling styles, and have found that the extra company on these remote beaches is really fun. At nights we have happy hour and then all cook dinner together. We are all foodies and have loved making homemade roasted tomatillo salsas, fresh fish tacos, paella from seafood we actually foraged ourselves, the list just goes on and on. I brought my Rick Bayless cookbooks on Mexican cuisine and have introduced Ashley to my favorite chef and his awesome, fresh and healthy Mexican food. We are also all big readers and have been reading the same books and talking about our favorite parts. I think Born to Run has been all of our favorite so far. Check out Richard and Ashley’s post on our clam digging adventures Desk to Glory.

We love our Cobb grill! Sam is getting it ready to BBQ some steaks.

Since we are spending so much time on the beach, I have been trying not to get too much sun. I am worried about aging myself about 10 years and also skin cancer….But even wearing sunscreen and a hat all day, I am getting golden brown. I have resigned myself to the fact that I will probably look Like Magda from “There is Something About Mary” in a few years.

I guess things could be worse....At least I will have a margarita in my hand.

This is the area we found about 12 pounds of small, tasty clams.
