Municipal Uspallata Apuyam

Date Visited: 12/02/2014

Location: -32.58658, -69.34720 (Altitude: 6257 feet)

Huge campground shaded with trees. Very quiet at night only annoying thing was the campground was over lit at night. We were the only ones here so it was great, could be an entirely different story on weekends and summer break. Bathrooms are a little run down, but it is only 30p per person, pretty cheap. 5 minute walk to town. Lots of outdoor space.

Location: -32.89036, -68.88325 (Altitude: 2858 feet)

We paid $20 US for our truck/camper and two people for one night. This place has lots of amenities: BBQ pits, sinks, tables, trash cans, and a little store with snacks. But bathrooms are run down. Not worth $20 but close to park and town.

This campground is a little run down but it’s got bbqs, tables, benches, big trees that give lots of shade and a above ground pool. We paid 100P/person/night too expensive for what you get but it’s Mendoza…

Dry River Pirate Camp

Date Visited: 12/07/2014

Location: -34.64843, -68.56354 (Altitude: 3100 feet)

We didn’t stay here overnight, we just stopped for lunch. Clearly, people had camped here before though. It’s far enough off the highway you won’t be bothered by noise. There is a big tree for shade and a fire pit. No other amenities. A bit of trash around but many 4×4 roads deeper into red rocks. No fences here! Farther up routa 144 there are a bunch of pull outs with BBQ areas where you could camp for free.

Camping El Dique

Date Visited: 12/07/2014

Location: -35.54265, -69.64375 (Altitude: 5026 feet)

A full service campground with trout ponds and restaurant, swimming pool (empty when we were here in early December), tables, bbqs, and showers. Bathrooms were cleaner than other campgrounds we’ve been in and even had toilet seats and hot showers (winning!). Lots of people were here during the day but none were campers. At night the place emptied out and was totally quiet–we were the only campers. Spaces are a little close together.

Manqui Malal

Date Visited: 12/08/2014

Location: -35.75545, -69.56553 (Altitude: 5820 feet)

This is a little campground right off the 40. Price was 90P per vehicle. This isn’t quite as nice a setup for those in truck campers because the space for trucks is more of a huge lot next to the river, but the owners offered to run power down to us and you are close to the stream and away from the other campers. There are also some trees that give shade in the afternoon. There are fire pits and places for grilling as well. A little road noise at night, but not bad. Cool showers. We wish we would have kept driving RT 40 so many lovely free camp options in about 40 kilometers.

Camping Municipal, Las Lajas

Date Visited: 12/09/2014

Location: -38.52096, -70.36077 (Altitude: 2297 feet)

This is a tiny town in northern Patagonia with not much going on, but surprisingly the campground is really nice. It cost 75P per motor home and 20P per person per night. Has all the amenities: wifi, hot showers, toilets, bbqs. The campground sits right next to a river. We stayed during the middle of the week and it was empty. Showers are super hot!

Eco Camping

Date Visited: 12/12/2014

Location: -39.13432, -71.27009 (Altitude: 3438 feet)

62P/person/night. Lots of space. Nice access to lake where we parked 50 feet from water on sand. Private spaces. Good rules like no loud music. Hot water only available for a couple hours in the evening. Nice place and better than many other campgrounds we passed nearby. Felt like we has place to ourselves even on weekend.

Camping Tromen

Date Visited: 12/14/2014

Location: -39.58841, -71.43019 (Altitude: 3740 feet)

This is a campsite at the trailhead to the volcano. $50 per person to camp. It’s about 2k from Lago Tromen. There are a couple other hikes in the area as well. A visitor center is right next to the campground with all sorts of info. Big rigs, there are some sharp turns so I don’t think you’ll make it in here. However, there is a large parking lot nearby where we saw a big unimog parked for the night so worst case you could camp there. There are signs in the park saying no pets allowed; no idea if this is enforced. The bathrooms are across the street from the campground next to the visitor center. The Mapuche man who runs it is a talker, every time we were outside he was there, super nice but exhausting.

Camping Catrite

Location: -40.17408, -71.40284 (Altitude: 2110 feet)

A really nice but pricey campground right on the lake, just outside San Martin. We paid 100P/person. Has pretty much all the amenities except wifi. Big rigs, there are some sharp corners so I don’t think you will fit here. We saw signs saying no dogs are allowed here since it is part of Nacional Park Lanin. Strong wind. Clean bathrooms, fire pit and tables. Stunning view down Lago Lacar.

Lago Villarino – Free Camping Area

Date Visited: 12/16/2014

Location: -40.44648, -71.54573 (Altitude: 3068 feet)

This is a great spot to free camp on Lago Villaruno. Great views of the lake and mountains, plenty of space when we were here during the week. Only amenity is the fire pits. If your rig is not good in wind, this area is very exposed and windy, the campground Faulkner has much less wind but you pay for it.

Camping Raginio

Date Visited: 12/17/2014

Location: -40.85496, -71.51800 (Altitude: 2490 feet)

One of the prettiest campgrounds we have been to with beautiful lake views. Crystal clear water and large private sandy beach. When we were here it was incredibly warm and the lake was very peaceful and had zero horseflies. Mild wind during evening. During the week we were alone here. Cost is 80P/person per night. Only negative is a bit of road noise and no pets allowed. This place was close to perfect! One of our favorite of the trip.

Camping Petunia

Date Visited: 12/19/2014

Location: -41.09608, -71.44705 (Altitude: 2592 feet)

We came here because we read they had laundry machines and wifi. Wifi is ok if you are right next to main building. No more laundry :(. This place is overpriced for what you get. Far from town, campsites are very close, small windy beach on lake. Cost is 100p a person plus 30p per car. So we paid 230p.

Full service campground just outside Bariloche. Not as much overall space as Camping Petunias but more space per site and closer to town. Pool, but it wasn’t filled when we were here (December). Price was 100P per person and 10P for wifi. They have washing machines here as well- 90 per bag of laundry a little steep but convenient. Good wifi reaches site. We returned here in January and price was 125 a person and wifi was in and out.

Camping Pichi Traful

Date Visited: 12/23/2014

Location: -40.50198, -71.58469 (Altitude: 2562 feet)

This is a beautiful campground on the western shores of Lago Traful. Very protected from the wind, we saw people sunbathing here. Also very good fishing spots along the lake and the river. Cross the river and there is a 45 minute hike to a beautiful waterfall. Quiet a night. We parked at the end opposite the river and had the place to ourselves–only the occasional angler and a couple horses ever walked by.

Two Lakes Bush Camp

Date Visited: 12/28/2014

Location: -39.75199, -71.50997 (Altitude: 2887 feet)

This is easily one of our favorite free campsites of the trip. Right on the small corridor that connects the two lakes here, you have amazing views of the volcano and the jagged peaks across the water. No amenities but signs of other camp fires. We rolled in late in the afternoon and has very little wind all night long. In the morning some gauchos told is we couldn’t park here during the day- so you may or may not be kicked out. There is deep sand on the road in here and we had to air down quite a bit. 4×4 needed.

There is a pullout right on the road with a dry river bed where we camped for the night. This is a bit dusty and close to the road, but the river is also right next to you. There are condors in the hills nearby. Wind got really intense the night we were here. No road noise after dark.

Camping Libre Chachin

Date Visited: 01/05/2015

Location: -40.14161, -71.65346 (Altitude: 2028 feet)

We found this campground while looking for a place to cook all our vegetables and stay a night before crossing the border into Chile. It is only a couple kilometers from the border and is one of the nicer free campgrounds we’ve stayed at. Tables and benches and fire pits are the amenities. It sits right at the intersection of the river and the lake. There are a half dozen other campgrounds between the border and San Martin so you’ll find something that will work for you out here. Not very crowded even during January and hike to waterfall nearby.

Camping Municipal Nuestra Señora Del Valle

Date Visited: 01/29/2015

Location: -48.75420, -70.24340 (Altitude: 879 feet)

This is a small municipal campground at the end of town. Price is free, although a sign asks for donations. Not a ton of space. Truck campers have limited room to park in parking lot and there are about 5 sites for tents. Water, power, hot showers, BBQ areas and a few tables. Would avoid on weekend, more than likely very full of locals.

Really only place in town for car campers with wind breaks and space. Free area by trailhead is very exposed to the wind which is powerful here. 80 pesos per person plus 30 for a car, or 15 per motor bike. Indoor kitchen and refrigerator available. Lots of backpackers here. Lots….wind breaks are only about 8 feet, we were much higher than the wind break, so we did not get much sleep, too windy. Music played all night from a near by bar on Friday that you could hear from the upper camping area.

Vista Fitz Roy Bush Camp

Date Visited: 01/31/2015

Location: -49.10390, -72.90689 (Altitude: 1549 feet)

Off side of the road next to river with a stunning view of Fitz Roy. No wind here and lots of space. The police drove by many times and waved (military base near lake) no problems parking here. Almost no traffic, super mellow and relaxing. Free. There is an established campground about 6 kilometers north of this spot next to a glacier and the lake. It was 100p per person for very basic amenities in woods with no view but protected from wind.

El Pilar Libre Parking Lot

Date Visited: 02/02/2015

Location: -49.23435, -72.93082 (Altitude: 1457 feet)

A second and much less crowded trailhead to Lago de los Tres starts here at El Pilar and we camped in the free parking area. This area has trees so it’s a bit protected from the wind but can still have strong gusts from time to time. We slept great here. You can see Fitz Roy from parking area. Not much privacy during day but very quite at night. Probably best for campers with bathroom and indoor cooking/ living space.

Fire pits, tables, and views of the lake with lots of space between them. Grim pit toilets on site. We spent 3 nights at camp site 18. Free!! Dogs allowed on leash.

We got here late after an amazing day at Perito Moreno, and the security guard told us we could park here for the night. It’s right next to the port on the sand where the boats leave to Upsala Glacier. The views were spectacular but there are no amenities and it is a bit exposed so I imagine it can get windy here. A bit of trash, but sandy spaces with trees tents could tuck behind and no wind while we were here during the evening but is picked up and blew crazy all night and all the next day. Awesome spot right on the river with huge red rock cliffs and cool breezes. No amenities except a fire pit and a garbage can. Fisherman use this spot to access the river but there is plenty of room. We were here alone during the week. It was very warm when we were here so we cooled off in the icy river.

Lots of pretty, remote areas to camp along this coast. Long pebbled beaches to walk on and plenty of space to be all alone. No facilities other than trash cans. Even on a four day weekend we were by ourselves. Negative is there were lots ( hundreds) of flies when we were here when it was hot and we had no wind. Cooler windy days they were not bad at all. Might be a pain if you had to cook outside. But at least no biting bugs and good water to swim in if it is hot outside.

Beautiful little lake off Ruta 3 to spend the night. We drove around dirt road on lake until we found a remote area near the water. Stunning sunset.

Nice big campground with trees on river next to a really nice park that rambles along river for about a kilometer. You can camp for free I think across river from campsite near a soccer field but it was so cheap here and uncrowded we decided to stay in campground. 15 pesos a person plus 20 for vehicle so 50 total for night. Only negative is a bit of trash about, but clean bathrooms.

Urban Camp Colonia Del Sacramento

Large dirt parking lot next to river. Minutes walking to old town and even on a Friday night surprisingly quiet. No bathrooms nearby (nearest are restrooms and showers at the yacht club about 250 meters away and showers are 45 pesos there) and no place really to pee, so best for rigs with toilets. No one cared we were here, really great town. Free. It’s a bit tricky to get here. From Av General Flores head south on Ituzaingo. Then take the first right on 18 de Julio. OSM has this street marked as one way but it isn’t on that block which will likely confuse your gps. From there just head past the plazas and you’ll get kicked out right next to the parking area.
