A fairly nice (but pricey) campground outside of San Pedro. It cost us 20,000 a night for camping. They have nice clean bathrooms and a pool. Not worth the $33 US they charge. Soccer match on small soccer area next to camping area went on past 11:30pm. Most expensive camping since US.

Antofagasta Desert Bush Camp

We were looking for a quiet place to stay near Antofagasta and this place fit the bill. We clearly weren’t the first campers here so you might have visitors on weekend but we did not see a person our car the entire time. Far enough from the highway to avoid the noise surrounded by dunes super dark and quiet. Mild wind. Free.

Mano Del Desierto Bush Camp

Right next to Mano Del Desierto you will see all sorts of dirt roads leading off into the desert. We followed one until we had a great view and were far enough from the highway that the noise wouldn’t bother us. Free but no amenities. A bit windy but as soon as sun goes down it stops.

Playa Blanca North End, NP Pan Azucar

We camped at the north end of this beach and although it was overcast it was very peaceful and beautiful. Just a parking lot really, no amenities except a trail to the beach. Free. NP seemed practically abandoned while we visited it, so we never even paid an entrance fee. Signs said the park is only manned in January and February. Signs also said no pets but it probably isn’t enforced strictly. As this is more of a parking lot, I’m not sure it’s a good spot for tents. Probably better to stick to the real camping areas. Might be busier on weekend.

Vallenar Hills Bush Camp

Just outside of Vallenar off the C-440 we wandered down some dirt roads and made a bush camp our of it. Gotta love the Atacama-just park where you’d like and camp. No amenities at this spot but it’s very quiet and private and we had a nice sunset.

Monumento Natural Pichasca

The ranger allowed us to camp in the parking lot here for free with the purchase of our tickets. There are three other campgrounds in town near the river that probably have better amenities but also carry Chilean camping prices. There are areas to sit, grill and hang out and bathrooms. Very peaceful at night.

Mamalluca Bush Camp

Observatorio Cruz del Sur

This is the parking lot for the Cruz del Sur observatory. You can arrange a tour in the nearby town. It was cloudy the night we were here so we skipped it. Overall nice and quiet, breezy as the sun set. No one ever came over and asked about a ticket, very mellow place. Nice camp spot. Free.

COPEC Station Quilimari

We just stopped at this Copec station for lunch and to use the bathroom. It’s similar to the other fancy Copec stations in Chile. Nice bathrooms, a small restaurant, showers for 500P, lots of room to park, and reasonable fuel prices. There is also a playground for kids. It overlooks the ocean.

Pichicuy Beach

This is a pretty awesome pirate camp spot. We aired down and opted to drive up on the beach but there are other spots right behind the dunes that any 2wd car can get to. No amenities but the price is free. Quiet at night, could barely hear highway noise above the sound of the surf.

First off, this place doesn’t have parking or camping. We state here because a guide book recommended it and we wanted to be close to the heart of Valparaiso. It had hot showers, extremely fast internet, and the owner writes guide books for South America so he is incredibly helpful. The location is great, and our private room was fine.

Parque Nacional La Campana Campground

This is a great campsite at the northern side of Parque Nacional La Campana. There are hiking trails and waterfalls nearby. It cost 2,500P/person to enter the park and camping was 6,000P/night but we stayed two nights and they did not make us pay for second night.Each site has a table and BBQ area, plenty of room for parking your rig or setting up a tent. They say no dogs but we saw locals with dogs camping. Lots of great spots for bikers and tent campers.

Copec Truck Stop

Snow Refugio Wild Camp

Camping Heuchulafken

A basic “campsite” but right on the lake with view of snowy volcanos. Fire pits and tables and very rustic pit toilets. Sign said 5000p per vehicle and 2500p per. We were here alone with the giant cows on a warm sunny windless day and it was really relaxing aside from the price. There was nobody here running the place but a Mapuche woman came and collected 10,000p for the night! Way too much for what you get, but we were all set up and did not want to move. The other bush camp next to this is a dirt pull out next to road with no view or privacy.

Camping Los Alamos

A decent campground about 15k outside of Puerto Montt. Big rigs, I just don’t think you’ll fit here- sorry. Sites are small and a bit cramped and slopey. Showers were hot, but we needed the owner to turn on hot water, so ask if they are cold. Price was 7k/night for the two of us. Internet was sketchy- fast at times and dog slow at others. Great view of the bay out our back window.

NP Chiloe Bush Camp

We stopped at the ranger station and the officer there told us we could follow the road another 4 km and take a left right before the bridge to get to a nice free camping spot. If you want a pay campground with amenities, there are plenty to choose from. We went with this campsite because of the seclusion, free cost and views of the sea. The little road continues from here and you may be able to follow it all the way to the beach; we weren’t aired down and didn’t explore much past this point. Super mellow place with nobody around. If you just cross the bridge and stay on the main road you’ll eventually have direct beach access. There are plenty of tire tracks out here on the beach and in sure you could wild camp there but you’ll need to air down.

Punihuil Beach Bush Camp

If you follow the road around past the beach towards Pumillahue there are a couple organized camp grounds (the one we checked had epic views but wanted 20k/night). Very pretty sunset.

A full service campground right next to the Montana (next driveway) that was much cheaper for tent campers. Tight squeeze getting in; big rigs I would walk it first to see if you’ll fit. Some tent spots are right on the lake with views of the Volcano. Erica’s note: I hated this overpriced, crowded place. Cost 4000 a person plus people with cars get charged another 10,000! So it was 18,000 for us to camp two feet away from other people. The woman told us about the extra 10000 for the car after we had totally set up camp or we would have never stayed.

Camping Volcan, Pumelin Park

All the campgrounds in Park Pumelin are spectacular and well taken care of. For car campers this was our favorite. Amazing views of the very active volcano and huge glaciers. Lots of rooms for rigs with covered eating area with table. Lots of space between sites. Very cold showers. 2500 a person but we never paid, the guard shack was closed when we arrived to camp and nobody ever came to collect.

Camping Grande, Pumelin Park

There is one parking space here that is perfect for truck campers, but it was taken while we were here so we popped up in one of the general parking areas. Huge grassy area, but you are not allowed to drive on it. As with other camp sites in Pumelin, this one is very nicely done but more for tent campers. Rigs not much privacy or view. Free when we were here. Very cold shower.

Sendero Mirador Wild Camp

Just before Camp Grande, a road turns off to the left. If you follow it for a couple kilometers you’ll get to a pullout parking area for a trail to a mirador (1.2k) and a camping area beyond it. This pullout would make a great wild camp spot as it is very secluded. We didn’t camp here but we wish he had (and there may be even better areas at the end of this road, we were on foot and didn’t follow it out the entire way)! When we entered the area the road had a couple of cones across it so we didn’t explore it in out truck but they were later removed. Worst case you can always head back to Camp Grande.

Rio Futaleufu Wild Camp

Puyuhuapi Town Wild Camp

Stunning location next to jagged peaks and waterfall. Amazing boondock spot! We camped next to the river with a view out our back window of a waterfall coming from a snow covered mountain. Puerto Marmol Camping

We booked a tour in town for the caves and glacier. If you want to just see the caves by small boat or kayak you should come here, it is cheaper, closer and they will let you camp for free. Since we did not book tour here she charged us 2000 total to camp. Nasty pit toilets, but we had a great view of the lake. There is not much privacy here, and they ran a loud generator until around 10pm that made me nuts. Fire pits and seating areas in camping area and beach and pier to access lake. All our wild camp sites have been much better than this, but had boat tour early AM. Ok if need a cheap place to stay.

Also, bathrooms were co-ed, kind of weird coming out of shower same time as an old man in shower next to me who only had a small towel…

Muddy Bush Camp

We got off the ferry late in the evening and this was the first quiet-looking spot we came to. It was raining a lot but there was gravel and the entrance in was ok. I don’t really recommend this spot unless you have indoor living space, but it’s probably better than camping at the ferry terminal. Very quiet at night and super dark. We actually slept great here just not a place you would want to hang out in, very muddy and not much to look at. Had only one car drive by here the entire time we camped. We saw some better sites about 2k up the road with great views but they would be more exposed to the wind.

Rio Baker Bush Camp

A great wild camp site on Rio Baker, our favorite river in this area with the bluest water we’ve ever seen. Only amenity is a fire pit. Room for tents and I think a big rig would fit here, although the entry is a bit sketchy- walk it first. Only downside here is that it’s a bit close to the road so you will here some cars and people can see you. But crazy good views. We squeezed our way all the way to the river front. Amazeballs. Stayed here for three days, if you can squeeze your way to the river like we did you have a million dollar view.

Paso Roballos Bush Camp

About 20k from the border there are some roads that lead off to the mountains. We followed these and found this little bush camp. Nice views, quiet at night. Some horse flies and it was a bit gusty with wind here but not too bad. There is a well built fire pit and lots of wood in the area for a fire, we built pit but felt it was too windy for fire.

Camping Libre El Rincon

This is a free campground in national park Perito Moreno. They have awesome sites for tent campers and really just a parking area for those in vehicles. The park and camping are free. Great hike from campground to Cerro Leon. Very un touristy park, only about 10 people in entire park when we were here in peak season. We loved it here.

Lago Azul Camping

A beautiful spot in Lago Azul with great views into the park–for free! I think CONAF has taken over this campground because a park ranger said we could only stay here one day and everyone who works here has CONAF uniforms. Lago Pehoe – Torres del Paine

The price is a ridiculous 9000 pesos per person here, but they have decent wind block at many sites (we were in #44) and the views are insanely good at some sites. Slow wifi in the office. BBQ pits and potable water available at the sites. We saw a fox running through the campground, so don’t leave food out and about. If the wind is not bad, there are lots of free places you can park around here for free, but most are totally exposed. This place is ideal for tent campers or people like us who the wind finally wins after 3 nights of boondocking.

We were up near Lago Grey trying to escape the wind without success, and on our way back towards the middle of the park we happened upon this gem. The wind wasn’t as fierce here (actually almost zero wind) and there are some trees for coverage. We also had an amazing view of the mountains from our back window next to an aqua blue lake. No amenities and a bit close to the road but zero traffic at night, morning traffic starts around 8am. Really best for self contained rigs. Stunning sunset. Free.

Side Of Road Wild Camp

We went out in search of a good wild camp spot outside of town a little too late in the evening and found fences and a town straight out of Deliverance (Puerto Prat) so we ended up here. Not a busy road and fairly beautiful views of the mountains. But not great either. Free. Very exposed here and no good wind protection. We were told you could park around the plaza in Puerto Bories- it may be better than this spot.

Paque Chabuco.

Free camping area near ocean with areas around trees with wind blocks for tent campers. We parked next to water with nice views down the bay. A bit unkempt and trash is blown about, but nice enough for a free camping area. Gross pit toilets, fire pits, trash cans and tables with benches. Wind can pick up a ton at night, we had to move at 11 pm to a more sheltered spot. Traffic noise in some spots is loud.

Hostel Independencia

We didn’t camp here, just stayed in the Hostal while our truck was getting some repairs. Eduardo the manager was super helpful an friendly. The showers are clean and usually very hot. They could probably use 1 more bathroom in the place given how many people were staying here. For campers, there is a grassy area to camp and maybe 1 truck camper could fit. Wifi was super fast but would sometimes drop out. We paid 7000 pp/night for a private room.

Magellan Bush Camp

This is a pretty exposed place but we didn’t have much wind at all while here and we had an amazing view out the back window to the sea where we saw tons of porpoises playing in the water. Fire pit is pretty much the only amenity. Free. Big rigs, there is plenty of space out here but it’s more a question of the access road- some low hanging branches in places may keep you from getting here.

Gravel Pyramid Bush Camp

This is a spot right off the road where you can hide from the wind behind a huge gravel pit. This area is actually not completely ugly. There is a little stream nearby and giant pastures with guanacos. A little noisy because it’s next to the road but only 3 cars drove by at night. Nice wind protection here. No amenities except gravel. Free.

Desdemona Shipwreck Boondock

Fin Del Camino Bush Camp

There is a small parking area at the end of the road in Tierra del Fuego Chile with great views into the bay with glaciers and snow capped peaks along the ocean channel. No amenities. Free. They have a sign saying there are penguins but we did not see any. Very beautiful, remote area.

Tierra del Fuego, wild camp

We scoped this place out but opted not to stay here because we wanted more wind protection. The small berm offering protection is on the opposite side of the road from the parking area. The camp in Cerro sombrero has more wind protection but much less privacy. Fine for large hard sided vehicles that don’t need much wind coverage.

By the ferry to Tierra del Fuego

We asked the Navy for permission to park behind the lighthouse for better wind protection. Definitely ask them before driving onto the base. Fairly good wind cover but more noise than we expected. Free. Nice view of the ocean and privacy but unless you need to camp here I would look for somewhere else. There are dirty public bathrooms next to ferry, shower was full of trash so I assume it was not used.

Pali-Aike National Park

We were the only ones in this park. Crazy to have this much space to yourself. Wind breaks for tents and places for rigs to hide from wind. Zero amenities here, so bring in everything you need. 1000 to enter per person camping was free. A few good hiking trails over lava flows and to volcano craters, caves and lakes. Cool place if you like stark volcanic environments. Lots of wildlife also.
